Austrian Men’s National team participates in MEL

The countdown for the big sports event in Austria in 2011 has already started! And to prepare for this big event the Austrian men’s volleyball national team will participate in this season’s Middle European League (MEL)! This has been decided on the occasion of a meeting of the Middle European Volleyball Federation in Vienna at the beginning of June this year. The Austrian team will thus have the unique possibility to play a number of test matches in order to prepare for the CEV European Championship 2011, which will take place September 10-18, 2011 in Austria and the Czech Republic (Vienna, Innsbruck, Karlovy Vary and Prague). On Sunday the guys of Coach Michael Warm will face their first opponent, the Croatian vice-champion OK Mladost Marina Kastela in Liezen.

The team will appear under the name “Team Club Austria” in the MEL and will always play three matches on three consecutive days. The two other opponents in the first “set of three” will be the defending champion ACH Volley Bled (SLO) on Monday in Oberndorf and the Austrian champion Hypo Tirol on Tuesday at the Alpenstrasse sports hall in Salzbug.

The President of the Austrian Volleyball Federation Peter Kleinmann is very happy about this arrangement: “We have achieved a sensational agreement in the negotiations! The EuroVolley 2011 will have a competition format that is unusual for volleyball, where the teams will have to play on three consecutive days. Our national team will have to play the 18 MEL encounters also in six “sets of three“. Plus, all opponents waived their home right – this means that between October 2010 and March 2011 we will have 18 additional promotion events for the European Championship in Austria. Our dream and slogan “Imagine the EuroVolley 2011 and everybody wants to be there” is getting more and more real. In addition, the national team shows a positive development. The guys have already proven that they can keep up with nations who have the standard of teams competing in the European Championship.

Also Austria’s Coach Michael Warm is enthusiastic about the work with the team: “During the last five months I had a lot of fun with the team. The individual players have developed excellently. On the one hand they’ve got talent and on the other hand they have the ambition to make progress. That we were able to defeat four seemingly stronger opponents (Greece, Turkey, Tunisia and Puerto Rico) is just the cherry on top and only shows that we are on the right track. Even the self-perception of the team has changed because the players now feel that as opponents they are being taken seriously. I am very content with the development. However, it has to be pointed out that we get every necessary support of the national Federation. In particular the MEL matches will be a great benefit for the national team.”
