Austria takes Silver at Beach Volleyball European Championship

Clemens Doppler an Matthias Mellitzer have won the Silver Medal at the Beach Volleyball European Championship Final in Berlin. The Austrian pair lost the highly dramatic final to the defending champions Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil 1:2 (18:21, 30:28, 18:20). It’s the third consecutive title for Nummerdor/Schuil after capturing the crown in 2008 and 2009.

“I feel like we have won the Silver Medal today and not like losing Gold. It was sensational! We have fought like lions. I want to thank all the people that have believed in us”, said Matthias Mellitzer. “Now, only minutes after the game it hurts of course. Especially because we had the chance to take it all. The way we played at the European championship and before in Klagenfurt, is exactly what we want to do. We were in our best shape for the most important games. I will capture my next European crown in 2012”, promised two time champion Clemens Doppler.

“They both have played really great. Winning the Silver Medal is a great achievement. They can be proud of that success. This is a great motivation and a big boost for the Volleyball Sport in Austria”, said OEVV-president Peter Kleinmann, who attended the games in Berlin.
