Turkey shocks Austria in straight sets

schneider-topAustria lost it’s second EuroVolley-game on Sunday in front of 5.500 sepctators in Vienna’s Stadthalle to Turkey 0:3 (21:25, 22:25, 20:25). On Monday the home team faces the strong Serbians who sit on top of Pool A after the second day of competition.

The EuroVolley Co-host held it’s own in the first set, but still fell behind early. Not long after the first technical time-out the team of head coach Michael warm was back in the game. At the end of the set the Turks stepped up their game once again and secured the 1:0-lead.

Also in the second set the Austrians played at one level with their opponents. Again the home team suffered from some bad moments, when they had to give up consecutive points. Montpellier-player Philipp Schneider did his best with eight points in this set, but also strong play couldn’t keep his team from falling behind 0:2.

Propelled by the fantastic crowd the Austrians didn’t give up and showed their best in the third set. Even though they went up 14:10 Binder, Gavan and Co. finally had to acknowledge the better form of the Turks. As an smash by Austrian high-flyer Thomas Zass was blocked at the score of 20:24 the second defeat for Austria was sealed.

Serhat Coskun had 16 points for the Turks who now advance to the play-off round. Philipp Schneider scored 15 points for the Austrian side.

After the win Turkish head coach Veljko Basic expressed his joy about the win as well as his compassion for the Austrians. „We didn’t make as many mistakes as yesterday. We finally managed to keep our level in service. Tomorrow will be a completely different match. We now can play without pressure. This win will give my team some confidence as we have a lot of young players who compete for the first time at such an important tournament. I wish for Austria that this team will come back very fast. They have to look forward and stay with what they were doing. I know that they need more time because I’m in a similar situation. They are trying to build something which takes some time“, he said.

“The team was focused, but it is also about international experience. In the third set, when we were in front, we made the wrong decisions. We still have to learn a lot”, acknowledged Austrian head coach Michael Warm.
