Italy beats Belgium in four sets

Innsbruck, Austria, September 10, 2011 – In Saturday’s second game in Innsbruck, Italia won against Belgium 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 29-27, 25-15). Italia is now leading Pool C of the 2011 CEV Volleyball European Championship duo to a better points ration compared to France. Belgium couldn’t take advantage of the win of the first set.

italienartLike in Saturday’s first match in Innsbruck, the team that had won the first lost the match. It took some time till Italy found a recipe against Belgium’s high-speed offense, led by setter Captain Frank Depestele. Also Italy’s service wasn’t as efficient as in the end of the match. Belgium used his chances and won the opening set 25-22.

In the second set Italy achieved to decrease Belgium’s reception percentage dramatically and created good opportunities for blocking. Seven kill blocks by Italy in the second set were the result – the “Squadra Azzurra“ took that second set quite easily.

The most important set was for sure that third. Belgium almost led the whole set. Italy’s setter Dragan Travica was responsible for the turn in this set. Travica started serving when Italy was down two points (19-21). As he finished, he had forced two receptions over the net by Belgium and had taken his team to the first lead for Italy in this set (22-21). In the end Italy proved, that the team has the greater international experience compared to Belgium and won the set 29-27.

In the fourth set Italy showed a convincing performance in serving and scored five aces. Five successive points put Italy in a comfortable situation (18-11). Afterwards Italy didn’t hold back to win the fourth set.

Head coach ITA, Mauro Berruto: „It took some time, till one of our big strengths, blocking, worked out. After the second set we had problems again. I guess we are more experienced and that’s why we won the third set.“

Head coach BEL, Claudio Gewehr: „Today I’m very disappointed . We worked a lot in the last time and we hoped to win this match. Italy won the big points. Now we want to stay on this level of playing for the next matches.“

Captain ITA, Cristian Savani: „I think we underestimated Belgium in the beginning and had to fight hard to find in the match.”

Captain BEL, Frank Depestele: „Despite we lost today, I’m confident for the next matches. We are a young team and are still missing some experience. In the third set everything was ready for us, but we forgot to finish the set.“
